Szczyrk
Mountain town in the valley of the Żylica, beneath Skrzyczne — the highest peak of the Silesian Beskids.
Overview
Cycling in Szczyrk
Szczyrk lies in the Silesian Beskids at the foot of Skrzyczne, the range's highest peak, with the Przełęcz Salmopolska and a web of forest climbs rising straight from the valley. Steady wooded gradients, quiet mountain lanes and the passes above the Żylica valley make it one of Poland's best-loved climbing bases.
Why it works as a base
Szczyrk sits in the Żylica valley, with the ridges of the Beskid Śląski rising straight off the main street, so the riding starts uphill more or less as soon as you clip in. There is very little flat here. Valley roads run a few kilometres between villages, then tilt into a climb, and most days out are built around linking one pass to the next rather than around a loop of rolling terrain. It suits riders who like sustained gradients in the 5–7% range, a bit of steeper punctuation, and long descents on decent tarmac.
The climb that defines the base is Przełęcz Salmopolska, the road link over to Wisła, and from that side of the range you can carry on to Równica above Ustroń. Further out, in the Beskid Mały, Góra Żar gives you the hardest sustained pitch in the area. Bike hire is available in town, so arriving without a bike is a workable plan. Stopping mid-ride for coffee and something to eat is entirely normal here, and you can happily build a day around a cycling café.

TRAVEL TIPS
- Flying with a bike? Most airlines charge €50-150 for bike boxes. Book bike transport when you book your ticket.
- Train travel: Many European trains accept bikes with advance reservation. Check Trainline or DB for bike-friendly routes.
The nearest airport is Leoš Janáček Ostrava (OSR), 65 km away on the Czech side. The transfer is a straightforward road hop north-east across the border into the Beskids, with the last stretch running up the valley into Szczyrk; a hire car or a pre-booked shuttle both work. If flying with a bike bag looks like more hassle than it is worth for a short trip, hiring in town is a reasonable alternative. Check what is available when you book rather than assuming, and bring your own pedals, shoes and saddle if you are fussy about fit.
