Europe's cycling capitals

Sunshine from breakfast, smooth tarmac and thousands of kilometres to ride — where the peloton builds its spring form.

Girona

Girona is the adopted home of the professional peloton, and it shows in the riding: the climb to Rocacorba, the Els Àngels loop, the Costa Brava coast roads and a dense web of gravel through the Gavarres. Warm weather, quiet lanes and cyclist-friendly cafés make it Europe's most popular training base.

Calpe

Calpe is the Costa Blanca's winter-training capital, where pro teams flock for the Coll de Rates, the Tudons and the coastal climbs above the Mediterranean. Dependable sunshine, smooth tarmac and a mix of flat coast and sharp inland cols make it ideal for early-season miles.

Nice

Nice is the winter capital of pro cycling, where riders warm up on the coast then head into the backcountry for the Col de la Madone, Col d'Èze and the balcony roads of the Arrière-Pays. Mild weather, endless climbing and the Col de Turini within reach make it a year-round training paradise.

Bormio

Bormio sits at the foot of the Passo dello Stelvio — 48 hairpins to 2,758 m, the roof of the Giro — with the Passo di Gavia, the Mortirolo and the Foscagno all within reach. In the Alta Valtellina it is one of the ultimate high-altitude Alpine bases, pairing a spa-town centre with the hardest passes in Italy.

Bourg-d'Oisans

Bourg-d'Oisans sits at the foot of Alpe d'Huez and its 21 iconic hairpins, but that's only the start — the Col du Galibier, Croix de Fer, Télégraphe and the fearsome Col de Sarenne all fan out from the valley. Few places pack this many legendary climbs into such a small radius.

Bédoin

Bédoin is the classic starting point for Mont Ventoux by its hardest face — 21 km through the forest of Bédoin to the wind-blasted lunar summit. Beyond the Giant, the Dentelles de Montmirail and quiet Vaucluse lanes offer recovery rides amid vineyards and olive groves.
