HOW WE RANK

Transparent criteria for our route evaluations, destination rankings, and business recommendations.

EDITORIAL INDEPENDENCE

Rankings are determined by our criteria, not by payment. Sponsored placements are labeled and never displace editorial positions. We reject partnerships that would compromise our recommendations.

ROUTE EVALUATION

Every route on CycleTrip passes through our Route Engine pipeline. We evaluate routes based on objective, measurable criteria:

Data Quality

  • GPS track verified against satellite elevation data (Copernicus GLO-30)
  • Surface data enriched from OpenStreetMap
  • Climb detection using sliding-window algorithm with category classification

Difficulty Classification

Based on total ascent, gradient distribution, and distance:

Easy<500m ascent, gentle grades
Moderate500-1500m, mixed terrain
Hard1500-2500m, significant climbs
Extreme>2500m or HC climbs

Climb Categories

We use the standard cycling classification based on length × average gradient²:

HC (Hors Catégorie)Cat 1Cat 2Cat 3Cat 4

Time Estimates

Riding times are calculated using a physics-based model accounting for distance, elevation, and gradient distribution. We provide estimates for three rider profiles:

  • Beginner: ~2.5 W/kg, comfortable pace
  • Intermediate: ~3.0 W/kg, steady effort
  • Strong: ~3.5 W/kg, training pace

DESTINATION RANKINGS

When we recommend destinations (e.g., “Best cycling destinations in Europe”), we consider:

ROUTE QUALITY & VARIETY

Number of verified routes, difficulty range, surface variety, iconic climbs

CYCLING INFRASTRUCTURE

Road quality, bike lanes, traffic levels, cycling-specific services

ACCESSIBILITY

Airport connections, bike transport options, public transit with bikes

SEASON & CLIMATE

Optimal riding months, weather reliability, heat/cold considerations

VALUE

Accommodation costs, rental availability, overall trip budget
