Lombardy

Bergamo

Bergamo is the launchpad for the Bergamo Alps, the amphitheatre of climbs that decides Il Lombardia most years — the Colle del Gallo, Selvino and the Passo di Ganda are all within reach. From the medieval Città Alta, roads climb quickly into the Val Seriana and Val Brembana for endless walls and quiet valley loops.

Bolzano

Bolzano is the low-altitude gateway to the Dolomites, where valley bike paths along the Adige give way to the long climbs of the Passo delle Erbe, Mendola and the approaches to the Sella group. Its position at the meeting of three valleys makes it a comfortable base with warm-weather riding and big mountains a spin away.

Wedged between Lake Garda and the wall of Monte Baldo, Malcesine offers two very different rides from one doorstep: flat, fast laps along the SS249 lakeshore, or the long grind up Monte Baldo through hairpins and chestnut woods. The lake's mild microclimate keeps the roads rideable most of the year, and quieter climbs toward San Zeno di Montagna reward those who want to escape the traffic.
