Why it works as a base
Lecco sits at the bottom of the eastern arm of Lake Como, wedged between the water and the limestone walls of the Grigne, and that geography sets the pattern for the riding. There is almost no flat. The lakeshore roads roll and tunnel their way north, and every road turning away from the water starts climbing within a kilometre or two. From one address you can ride into the Triangolo Lariano, the wooded hump of land between the two lake branches, or head east into the valleys of the Bergamo Alps. It suits riders who like long, steady climbing days and don't mind that the descent usually drops them straight back to the shore.

Passo di Valcava is the hardest thing in easy reach: 14.5 km at 7.5% from Corte, 1087 metres of gain, a maximum of 17.6%, topping out at 1340 m. It is a category 1 climb that never really lets you settle — the average is honest, but the steep sections are steep enough that a compact and a big sprocket are the sane choice rather than an admission of anything.
