HOW WE RANK

Transparent criteria for our route evaluations, destination rankings, and business recommendations.

EDITORIAL INDEPENDENCE

Rankings are determined by our criteria, not by payment. Sponsored placements are labeled and never displace editorial positions. We reject partnerships that would compromise our recommendations.

ROUTE EVALUATION

Every route on CycleTrip passes through our Route Engine pipeline. We evaluate routes based on objective, measurable criteria:

Data Quality

 • GPS track verified against satellite elevation data (Copernicus GLO-30)
 • Surface data enriched from OpenStreetMap
 • Climb detection using sliding-window algorithm with category classification

Difficulty Classification

Based on total ascent, gradient distribution, and distance:

Easy<500m ascent, gentle grades
Moderate500-1500m, mixed terrain
Hard1500-2500m, significant climbs
Extreme>2500m or HC climbs

Climb Categories

We use the standard cycling classification based on length × average gradient²:

HC (Hors Catégorie)Cat 1Cat 2Cat 3Cat 4

Time Estimates

Riding times are calculated using a physics-based model accounting for distance, elevation, and gradient distribution. We provide estimates for three rider profiles:

 • Beginner: ~2.5 W/kg, comfortable pace
 • Intermediate: ~3.0 W/kg, steady effort
 • Strong: ~3.5 W/kg, training pace

CLIMB CATEGORIES

Every climb category on CycleTrip is computed, never assigned by feel. The difficulty score is (average gradient %)² × length km, calibrated against the official categories of Grand Tour climbs:

HCscore ≥ 900
Category 1score ≥ 330
Category 2score ≥ 205
Category 3score ≥ 70
Category 4below 70

Where a race organiser has published an official category for a specific ascent (Tour, Giro, Vuelta road books), the official category takes display priority and the computed one is the fallback. Gradients and elevation come from OpenStreetMap geometry and a digital elevation model sampled every 100 m with a rolling median — the same profile you see charted on every climb page. Climb names are verified against official race parcours and OpenStreetMap passes — a climb we cannot verify keeps no name at all rather than a guessed one.

DESTINATION RANKINGS

When we recommend destinations (e.g., “Best cycling destinations in Europe”), we consider:

ROUTE QUALITY & VARIETY

Number of verified routes, difficulty range, surface variety, iconic climbs

CYCLING INFRASTRUCTURE

Road quality, bike lanes, traffic levels, cycling-specific services

ACCESSIBILITY

Airport connections, bike transport options, public transit with bikes

SEASON & CLIMATE

Optimal riding months, weather reliability, heat/cold considerations

VALUE

Accommodation costs, rental availability, overall trip budget

LOCAL BUSINESS RANKINGS

Our “Best of” lists are computed from measurable signals, weighted as follows for rentals: reputation 55% (a Bayesian blend of Google star rating and review volume, so hundreds of reviews outrank a handful of perfect scores), popularity 20% (log-scaled review count), facilities 20% (on-site workshop weighs most), and proximity 5%. A shop with no evidence that it rents bikes at all is excluded — proof comes from Google’s own classification, riders’ reviews, or the shop’s website, and is stored with a verbatim quote. Prices, bike types and brands shown on ranking cards are extracted from each shop’s own rental pages the same way: every claim carries the sentence that proves it, and a claim we cannot quote is not shown. The signals we look for:

Bike Rentals

 • Fleet quality: Modern groupsets, well-maintained bikes
 • Bike variety: Road, gravel, e-road options
 • Size range: Availability for different rider heights
 • Service: Booking flexibility, fitting, support
 • Pricing: Value relative to fleet quality

Bike-Friendly Hotels

 • Secure storage: Locked room, individual stands
 • Washing facilities: Bike wash area, hose access
 • Tools & support: Basic tools, pump, repair assistance
 • Cyclist services: Early breakfast, laundry, route advice
 • Location: Proximity to routes, quiet roads access

Cycling Cafés

 • Bike parking: Safe, visible parking area
 • Cyclist menu: Energy-appropriate food and drinks
 • Community: Cycling culture, group ride meetups
 • Location: On popular routes or at natural rest points

SPONSORED PLACEMENTS

Some businesses pay for featured visibility. Sponsored placements are:

 • Always labeled with “Sponsored” or “Featured Partner”
 • Displayed separately from editorial rankings
 • Never allowed to displace or reorder editorial positions
 • Subject to basic quality requirements before acceptance
