WHAT IT IS

One row per ascent side of a road-cycling climb: where it starts, where it tops out, how long and how steep it is, and which category that makes it. The same data drives the climb pages on this site — the dataset is an export, not a separate collection.

  • 1,291 ascent sides (a climb has one row per road up)
  • 6 countries: France, Italy, Spain, Poland, Andorra, Switzerland
  • Every road geometry map-matched to OpenStreetMap; every climb name verified against an official race parcours or an OSM pass/peak, or left empty

The GeoJSON carries the same attributes plus the road geometry of each side as a LineString.

CATEGORY FORMULA

Category follows one score: score = (avg_grade %)² × length_km. Thresholds are calibrated against the categories the Grand Tours publish for the same climbs:

  • HC — score ≥ 900
  • Cat 1 — score ≥ 330
  • Cat 2 — score ≥ 205
  • Cat 3 — score ≥ 70

Where a race has published an official category for a climb, that category is shown on the site; the computed one is the fallback. The dataset carries the computed category. More in the methodology.

The dataset is published under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0). You may copy, redistribute and build on it, commercially too, as long as you credit the source. The required attribution is:

Road geometry is derived from OpenStreetMap, © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License (ODbL). Elevation is sampled from open terrain models. Any redistribution of the geometry keeps the OpenStreetMap attribution.
